So, yes. It’s that time again. Bout of Books begins today and is running through Sunday the 11th. Here’s what I’ll be reading.

Chuck Wendig’s Atlanta Burns
and, if things seem to go well, I’ll hopefully read
Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad.

Bout of Books 11 Update – Saturday
So, I’ve dropped the ball a bit. I’ll admit it. But all of a sudden I got sick. Falling asleep at 6 pm sick and I can feel it’ll happen again. I’ve just not been doing well. I guess life just happens.
Since my last update, I finished Guy Gavriel Kay’s River of Stars. It was pretty impressive. I’ve also gotten a quarter of the way into Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. I’ll hopefully finish it today. It’s only a two hundred eighty pager.
I’ve also gotten my hands on a copy of Max Brook’s new “Harlem Hellfighters,” a graphic novel about the Hellfighters.
That may be a bit more manageable.
Bout of Books 11 Update – Tuesday
So, we’re already through Tuesday. It’s a terrifying thought. All I really did today was putz about and read Wonder Woman. The New 52 is one of the best things DC could have done and the new Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Blood is a solid choice. It’s filled with bold lines and striking imagery. The plot has a lot of potential.
I’m officially half way through River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay. Do you ever get that excited, tingly feeling when you know the big conflict of the book is about to happen and that everything is about to kick into gear? I’m doing that. So far, the characters are pretty cool and the plot set up is interesting. I’ll tell you more later.
I did manage to do the OTP challenge today.
My OTP (embarrassingly enough) is Ginny/Draco from Harry Potter. I know; I know. But, I’ve loved it since I was a kid. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve tried to explain. Oh well. Rooting for the underdog?
I have a good feeling about tomorrow. I’m going to pick up Coraline by Neil Gaiman to listen to while I clean. That counts too, yeah?
Bout of Books 11 Update – Monday
Happy Monday!
So, it’s the first official day of Bout of Books. I haven’t really sat to do much reading. Here’s what’s happened so far.
-I began and finished Pretty Deadly Vol. 1, a graphic novel published by Image Comics. It was beautiful, though I’m not 100% sure where it’s going next.
-I began and finished Lazarus Vol. 2, another graphic novel published by Image Comics. It was a solid improvement off the first.
-I read 50 pages of River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay and am hoping to get a good chunk more of it done. I’m home alone tonight, so with some luck I can knock out another 100 pages.
I didn’t do any of the challenges, but I’d like to. I’m going to spend some time tonight looking at the ones posted to see what is doable.

Bout of Books 11 Update– Sunday
So, I haven’t done much today.
I was going to go to the library. I want to pick up an audio copy of Coraline by Neil Gaiman. It’s about three hours long and perfect for chores around the house.
I went to Half Price Books and picked up a copy of the final two books in Mira Grant’s (Seanan McGuire) Newsflesh series.
I also am starting Pretty Deadly, a graphic novel published by Image Comics.
I haven’t read hardly anything today and will do better tomorrow. Do you ever have a problem starting read-a-thons?
Books I may (or may not) read during Bout of Books 11
So, Bout of Books 11 is rolling around. It takes place in approximately 2 weeks. Though I partook in Bout of Books 10, I wasn’t great about updates, challenges, or staying up to date with others’ reading goals. I’m hoping to do much better this round.
So, without much further ado, here is my Bout of Books 11 (rough) TBR:
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gaabriel Garcia Marquez I have wanted to read this for a long time. It’s a family story from Marquez, one of the most prominent magical realism authors. Marquez passed away a few months ago, so I think I’ll take the opportunity. If I don’t read it earlier.
Hyperion by Dan Simmons This is one of my S.O.’s favorite books, and it’s about time I’ve read it. Otherwise, I feel like I’ll never know what he’s talking about or why he likes the books he likes. The Goodreads Reading Buddies group has also been making its way through Simmons’ quartet.
Deathless by Cat M. Valente This one has been on my TBR forever and I’m itching for some Valente. This one is supposed to be a Russian fairy-tale retelling.
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath Can you talk feminism or women’s lit without some Plath?
Bout of Books 10.0 Wrap Up!
For my first BoutofBooks, I must say I’m not disappointed. I read quite a bit, though not much more than I usually do, and I had the chance to reflect on my reading habits.
I finished:
-The Road by Cormac McCarthy
-Let Me In by John Ajvide Lindquist
-The Assassin King by Elizabeth Haydon
-The Julian Chapter: A Wonder Story by R.J. Palacio
and
-Saga Vol 3 by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples
I also read 60 pages of Cyador’s Heir, L.E. Modesitt’s upcoming novel.
I wanted to read more. I didn’t get around to Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card and I spent two days not reading at all. I was called to work until ten at night (an almost twelve hour shift) twice over the week and spent the weekend mostly taking care of some family things. I’m not really upset about it though. More than anything, it gave me a chance to really remember what I have to value.
Total page count runs at 1460 pages, so not too bad. Plus, I did read two out of the three books I set on my “For Sure” TBR.

Bout of Books Day 4 (Thursday)
So, I’ve been doing alright with my Bout of Books 10.0 Challenge.
When I started, I set out to read:
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Let Me In by John Ajvide Linqgvist
and
Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card
I was able to finish up The Assassin King by Elizabeth Haydon. I wanted to make sure I read it to give me some context for the ARC I have for her upcoming book. I was finished with it by the end of day one.
I then started in on McCarthy’s The Road and have really enjoyed it. That same day, I read a novelette by R.J. Palacio, The Julian Chapter: A Wonder Story.
Day three, though, was a slow one.
Work was hard and I wasn’t able to get anything read. I came home exhausted and read a total of 30 pages. I was pretty uninspired to read.
I did pull out a graphic novel, though. I finished the first half of Manifest Destiny Vol 1. It’s a pretty campy story about Lewis and Clarke. It features buffallo headed men and plants that turn humans into zombies.
Today, I’m getting into Let Me In . I’m almost a hundred pages in and it’s starting to roll. It’s a better feeling.
